PTC WEN Immediate Past Chairperson Dr. Juana Tapel was elected as a board member of the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists at ICWES19 in New Zealand.


Dr. Jane Tapel was recently elected as a member of the board of the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists at the 19th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Philippines will be hosting the ICWES20 from August 4 to 7, 2026. She also presented the details for the upcoming 20th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists collocated with the 10th Philippine Women Engineers and Scientists Summit (PWESS10) which will be held at the Clark Freeport and Economic Zone at Pampanga.

PTC WEN Treasurer Dr. Evelyn Laurito presented her paper at ICWES 19, New Zealand.

Dr. Evelyn Laurito presented her paper “Engineering Innovation and the Circular Economy” at the 19th International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists held on September 4-6, 2023, Aotea Center, Auckland, New Zealand. Her paper describes how Engineering Innovation can accelerate the transition to the Circular Economy and achieve the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Laurito is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Santo Tomas. She is active with UNIDO on Solid Waste Management and BAT/BEP on the elimination of persistent organic pollutants. She worked with GIZ of Germany on eLearning and development in Asia and Africa. At UST she started the CDIO (Conceive Design Implement Operate) Initiative. She gives training to Chemical Engineers, faculty and students on the benefits of Design Thinking and the Circular Economy. She is an active Fellow of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers and presently the Treasurer of the Philippine Technological Council Women Engineers Network.

INWES and Dr. Jane Tapel

As the chair of PTC WEN (Philippine Technological Council – Women Engineers Network) for seven (7) years, Dr. Tapel is the Philippines’ official representative to INWES-APNN, a platform for Asian women scientists and engineers to exchange information such as Asian women scientists’ organizations and policies and the current technology situation in every member country.

As the fifth chairperson of INWES-APNN, Dr. Tapel will succeed Dr. Ariunbolor Purvee of Mongolia when she starts her term of office next year. Previous chairpersons of the organization were Dr. Hyang Sook Yoo of Korea, Mrs. Kayoko Sugahara of Japan, and Dr. Chia-li Wu of Taiwan.

For a three-year term, Dr. Tapel will lead the INWES-APNN from 2023 to 2026. Dr. Tapel’s election is expected to boost the Philippines’ bid to host the International Conference of Women Engineers and Scientists (ICWES) in 2026. Established in 1964, ICWES is an international conference for engineers and scientists that takes place every three years in different countries around the world.

Aside from the APNN, INWES also has three other regional networks – the INWES – ARN (Africa Regional Network), INWES – Europe, and INWES-MENA (Middle East and North Africa).

PTC WEN efforts amidst COVID 19

Since the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, the Women Engineers Network continue to be very active  in providing assistance to our frontliners and deprived communities, acting as frontliners themselves or giving the much needed support to hospitals and institutions.

A 3-part episode on Women Engineers in the Philippines, broadcast via the radio station  DZUP, Department of Women and Development Studies of the University of the Philippines will have officers from PTC WEN as special guests. The broadcast is hosted by Roselle Leah K. Rivera and will be aired on August 2, 9 and 16 from 12nn to 1 pm.

The first episode held last August 2 was participated by PTC WEN’s adviser Lydia Tansinsin of PIChE, Maribel Mena of SMEP, Archelle Baculi of PSME and Evelyn Laurito of PIChE. The group discussed the History of WEN and their experiences as women engineers in a male-dominated field.

What is PTC WEN?

PTC WEN or the Women Engineers Network is an organization of women engineers representing the national engineering organizations under the umbrella of the Philippine Technological Council (PTC) and the Women Engineers of the Asean Federation of Engineering Organization (WEAFEO). Aware of the important role of engineering in the advancement of the social, economic, and industrial development of Philippines, its objectives are:

  • To promote understanding, goodwill and cooperation among women engineers
  • To promote and exchange ideas, concerns and experiences.
  • To support the purposes and objectives of the PTC and WEAFEO.
